The movement of the ocean and meditative stillness between sets. The spray of saltwater.The exhilaration of catching a wave.The feeling of being in a force so much bigger than oneself.

This joy is something we believe everyone should be able to experience. For women, breaking into this sport is not without challenges. Barriers that seem small, like ill-fitting wetsuits, can deter or completely dissuade women from trying surfing.

Basalt was born from the fundamental idea that an easier wetsuit should exist, that women deserve a wetsuit that doesn’t inhibit them but makes the ocean and surfing endlessly accessible.

Our
Story

The idea for Basalt came from our firsthand struggles with wetsuits and witnessing countless friends battle ill-fitting suits—ones that were impossible to get in and out of or forced shorter sessions due to discomfort. As surfers who love nothing more than being in the ocean, we created Basalt as a pushback against what the surfing experience has traditionally been for women. The journey began in San Francisco, inspired by a passion for surfing and a determination to solve the real wetsuit problems women face every day.

Our
wetsuits

Access, inclusion and confidence in the ocean begin with a wetsuit that fits. We listened to women surfers talk about their challenges: suits that weren’t designed for their bodies and or just impossible to get in and out of. With these insights at the forefront of our minds we set out to design a new wetsuit that honors and celebrates women’s changing bodies. A wetsuit that reimagines the entry and exit system, prioritizing simplicity, making it easier to suit up and get in the water.

Each Basalt suit is handcrafted in Japan, made one at a time from premium Japanese limestone rubber. At each stage of production, a quality-control card travels with your suit and is stamped by every craftsperson with their hanko (personal seal), so nothing leaves the line until it’s right. The result is a warm, long-wearing suit that’s easier to get on and off and built to keep its integrity session after session. Learn more on our Our Wetsuits page.
